Matty's News Archive 2011All-New MOTU 30th Anniversary Art DebutsDecember 21, 2011 MOTU Fans, The holidays are just about here, so we thought we'd give you a little present… here's your first official look at the all-new artwork for the Masters of the Universe® 30th Anniversary celebration!
Gabriel De La Torre, Staff Product Designer from Mattel Entertainment Design, told us, "This ‘alt’ style to the Classic brand was created as a visual way to re-imagine the vast characters and worlds of Masters of the Universe® with a contemporary edge. This dynamic artwork will be used across multiple categories in consumer products and beyond, celebrating our Masters of the Universe 30th Anniversary program launching in 2012." Creating a new look for an iconic brand like MOTU while still retaining the integrity of its original style was no simple task. Gabe and his team searched for an artist who not only had the style they envisioned, but also a love for MOTU. "We landed on a well-known talent named Alvin Lee, whose work can be seen in a variety of brands and also many popular video games. With the finished product, his passion for the characters and the brand really shined through. Raymond Makowski (Staff Product Designer) and I worked with Alvin Lee to create a dynamic collection of poses and battle scenes that not only pushed the designs of the characters, but also captured the essence of the Masters of the Universe® feel--heroic, perilous and empowering." Gabe said. Look for the new art to appear on toy packaging starting in Q1, and on licensed goods from shirts to lunchboxes throughout 2012. Core Characters Available Year 'Round Great news… we heard your requests and will have a selection of fan-favorites available in the shop all year so you can buy them anytime! We're starting with MOTUC and Ghostbusters™, and these figures will be available starting January 17th so you can combine them with other products and save on shipping!
January Subscription Key Dates Because there are so many subs and no separate "combo" this year, we won't be posting a summary of the costs, but here are the key dates for January 2012: Your card will be charged 5 calendar days before the on-sale date, so plan to have funds available before Thursday, January 12, 2012. Subscription orders will begin shipping 2 business days before the on-sale date, which is Friday, January 13, 2011. 2012 Price Increase Please remember, prices are going up in 2012 for non-subscription items. As we told you when the subs were originally on sale, we are going to hold our prices at the 2008 levels for all subscription holders, but in 2012 they will go up for items purchased during the regular monthly sales. This applies to both subscription holders and those without subscriptions: if you purchase products during our regular monthly sales, prices will be higher in 2012. The pricing for basic figures will be $22 each, beasts will be $33 each, and large items like the Star Sisters™ set will be $66 (prices, as always, are subject to change). This only applies to non-subscription purchases -- pricing for items purchased through subscriptions will remain as previously stated. So remember, the first sale of 2012 kicks off Tuesday, January 17th at 9 a.m. PT (12 noon ET). If you are a Club Eternia® subscriber, we will stand by our commitment to ship your entire order in one shipment, so subscription orders will not ship until Demo-Man™ is received at our warehouse. We expect that to happen sometime in early January. So, if you're a subscriber only to Club Eternia®, both Demo-Man™ and Battleground Evil-Lyn® will ship together around the beginning of January. And if you have a combo subscription with Club Ecto-1, then Demo-Man™, Battleground Evil-Lyn®, and the Ghostbusters™ 6" Vigo figure will all ship together when Demo-Man™ becomes available. We're stoked because not only is this the first time The Rockers 2-Pack ($30 per pack) is being offered by Mattel, but Marty Jannetty™ has never before appeared in our lineup. Official product pages are being created as you read this, but in the meantime here's the description from the package-back: Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty were friends and tag team partners even before they hit the WWE® scene as the Rockers. In 1988, the lively duo gained instant success after several victories against the Brain Busters and Rougeau Brothers. Although they proved themselves to be worthy opponents, the Rockers never officially held the World Tag Team Championship. The duo did defeat the Hart Foundation in a World Tag Team Championship Match in 1990. Unfortunately, the top rope broke during the best-of-3 falls match, and because of that, was later declared a no-contest. The Rockers' legendary partnership came to an abrupt end in 1992. Michaels brutally attacked Jannetty, hitting Sweet Chin Music and putting him through a window during their infamous interview on The Barber Shop. Final Collector Appreciation Tour Winners Named at NYCCOctober 21, 2011 Toy Fans, New York City was the last stop for our 2011 MattyCollector.com’s Collector Appreciation Tour. You know what they say about the Big Apple ... if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere, so we're thrilled to reveal the two collectors who made it as winners of the New York “Best Local Collection” Contest and the “City Celebration” Contest! “Best Local Collection” Contest Winner "I originally wanted to do a panoramic view of the JLU carded collection. It didn't quite pan out and I realized I had much more Mattel product to show!" With a collection of over 1,000 toys that includes JLU, MOTU, Ghostbusters™, Batman, and DC Universe Classics, we asked what got him started collecting. "It was probably He-Man or Skeletor. I had a decent MOTU collection as a kid and unfortunately, they were sold in a garage sale." Luckily, Andy didn't let that stop him. "That's really part of what makes collecting the new line so much fun." Andy, a graphic designer, says his family tolerates his obsession pretty well. In fact, he remembers pleading as a child for his dad to bring him back a MOTU figure from a trip. "He returned with Spikor, and I was elated. So Horsemen and Toyguru, lets get to Spikor! I also loved the original packaging of the MOTU line, and I think that might've started me down the path of graphic design." On behalf of the team, we're glad to have been an inspiration. “City Celebration” Contest Winner Who you gonna call when it's time to pick the winner of the "City Celebration" Contest? For his entry featuring his Ghostbusters™ collection, we called Jeremy Sanchez! It's no surprise when we asked him how he got the idea for his entry he quoted Ray Stantz. "I couldn't help it... it just popped in there." He continues, "I visited the famous library from the movie, and tried to figure out the best way to utilize the figures I'd brought along." With over 200 toys in his collection, Jeremy definitely favors the Ghostbusters™ line. When asked about his favorite toy, he replies, "I would have to say my TRU exclusive Ghostbusters 2 set. It brings me back to being 4 years-old and watching the movie in theaters with my mom and sister." And his opinion on the best recent Mattel toy? "Not to sound one-track minded, but Ghostbusters™. It's such an amazing line to me, mainly because of the attached nostalgia, but also because of the massive potential for expansion." Although his family thinks he's crazy for having his collection, they think it's cool nonetheless. So do we, Jeremy! The subscription is the only way to guarantee the lower prices and get fan-favorite Metron, which will not be sold at MattyCollector.com! MOTUC Club Eternia® Since we launched the MOTUC line in 2008, while costs have risen we've worked hard to hold prices for 6" figures at $20 each. For 2012, prices for figures purchased through the subscription will remain as previously advertised ($20 for 6" figures, $30-$60 each for beasts/variants/multi-packs). We're finalizing the numbers now, but figures and other items sold outside the subscription during our monthly sales at MattyCollector.com will definitely be higher. MOTU 30th Anniversary Series Because this series was created as part of the year-long anniversary celebration, we've been given permission from management to also offer these figures to subscribers for the 2008 price of $20 each (plus shipping/taxes/fees), but the price will be higher for figures sold outside the subscription at MattyCollector.com during our monthly sales (pricing to be announced). If you love MOTU, it's the best way to ensure you'll receive every one of the MOTU 30th Anniversary Series special releases at the lower price. You can get this subscription whether you have a subscription to Club Eternia or not, but purchasing both ensures you'll receive every MOTUC figure released in 2012, plus you'll save on shipping! Voltron® Club Lion Force In homage to the series and to make sure you get every figure needed to build the 23" Voltron and Ultra Blazing Sword, each pilot will come as a set with its corresponding lion, so Keith and the Black lion will come as a set, Hunk and the Yellow lion will come as a set, etc. Prices for the pilots and lions are $50-$65 per set, whether purchased through the subscription or when they are sold on MattyCollector.com during our monthly sales (they won't be sold separately). Voltron® Subscription Details AnnouncedJuly 20, 2011 Voltron® Fans, The Voltron collector line has been revealed at SDCC and I can tell you we are now ready to officially form Voltron! Here's the big news: For 2012, the Mattel Voltron line includes five Lions (black, green, yellow, blue, red) that form robot Voltron plus five Pilots in 3 ¾" scale (Pidge, Hunk, Lance, Allura, Keith). Staying true to the series, each release consists of a Lion and its corresponding pilot, so Keith pilots only the Black lion, Hunk pilots only the Yellow lion, etc.
Every pilot comes with an alternate helmet head, and a key that unlocks the cockpit of their corresponding Lion and allows it to transform with one touch from Voltron mode to Lion mode. The key can also be used as a display base for the pilot figure. There's also an exclusive item available only to members of the Voltron subscription, Club Lion Force, but I can't tell you what it is until the Mattypalooza panel on Friday at SDCC. Thanks to you, loyal Ghostbusters fans, it’s been the line’s best year yet and it ain’t over yet! I’ve got great things planned for 2011, 2012 and beyond so you’ve got a lot to look forward to. Now about the release schedule… Because the team wanted to do right by our Winston Zeddemore with Slime Blower figure, it made the schedules to slip a bit. But never fear… there will definitely be a total of six subscription figures released throughout 2011, plus, of course, the seventh: the Club-exclusive Marshmallow Mess Ray figure that shipped to subscribers in March! At press time, here’s what’s coming and when through October: June 15 July 15 July 20 at SDCC 
August 15 October 17 We still have one Ghostbusters 6" Club Ecto-1 figure to reveal for 2011. That figure will ship in December and be revealed at SDCC along with the first 2012 figure! Just keep in mind that like what happened with our original Zeddemore sale date, various issues (like a potential fourth reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants or a mass sponge migration, for example) can cause things to get switched up so the schedule isn’t final until, well, it’s final. Last month I posted a preview of what’s coming in the new Green Lantern toy line. When Matty Fan Forums member Fightoned posted in the Ask Matty section that he wanted more details, Toy Guru answered. He asked me to share his response with everyone, so here you go!
Q. I have seen and read all kinds of great stuff coming out with the Green Lantern movie. But what is the complete list of all the lines associated with Green Lantern? Your news section hints of figures but a complete listing would be VERY HELPFUL! -- Fightoned
A. Ready? The majority of the line is kid-aimed. While we will have our Movie Masters® and other adult collector items, we're really excited to get kids playing with Green Lantern!
The Green Lantern lineup will have the following products (click here to see images):
Basic Figures. Each basic figure comes with a construct accessory. The larger characters, like Kilowog or Voz, come with a "construct adaptor" letting their larger hand sink up with any standard size construct. There will be a total of 20 figures, including a few Hal variants, but this is the bulk of your figure selection. Each figure also includes a kid-sized ring.
Figure/Vehicles. 8 different "construct vehicles" (from and inspired by the film) that all transform between two modes with "ring activators," such as a pull-string ring or a twist-and-unlock ring. This line will include Abin Sur's escape pod, Hal's mech suit, and Kilowog's space cycle.
Deluxe Figures. Battle Shifters™! All of the Battle Shifter™ figures feature a transforming construct that instantly springs out (think plastic origami) with one touch! Check out Tomar Re's Scorpion Assault and Hal Jordan's Capture Claw™!
Galactic Scale™ 10” Figures. Featuring Hal and Kilowog with light up rings and chest symbols. Each comes with a construct weapon.

“Best Local Collection” Contest Winner
John Loftus, Aptos, CA
Although our winner is technically John Loftus, the honor really belongs to his entire family, which includes wife Jade and daughters Cheyenne, age 12, and Talia, age 8, and son Cayden, age 6. Why? Because the collection you see below belongs to his kids, too. John smilingly tells us, “The JLU stuff is my kids’ collection. I just bankroll it.”
John collected toys as a kid, but stopped when he reached college age. “Then I had kids,” John says. “You start to patrol the toy aisles again for gifts and such. In 2002, my daughter Cheyenne started to watch Justice League. I found out about the toy line and it took a few months, but I located the original 7 characters for Christmas. Every Christmas and birthday since has had some assortment of JLU figures. At some point my wife and kids turned the tables on me. For Father's Day one year, they gave me some toys for my studio area. That was enough to reignite my collecting flame.”

Kevin tells us that when his family and friends see his toys, they “look at my collection with varying degrees of wonder, amazement and horror.” Well, now Kevin can add envy to that list, because his obsession (and talent) won him the “City Celebration” Contest!
Kevin says the concept was an easy one for him to conceive. “When I sat down at my desk to think about what figures would have a unique tie to my city, seated next to me was Plastic Man. I recently moved to the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco, 2 blocks from Lombard Street, arguably the most winding street in the world. Making the connection between the two was a no-brainer. I dodged a bunch of tourists’ cameras and tour buses to get the perfect shot of Lombard’s turns. In the background you can see Coit Tower, Treasure Island, the Bay Bridge and my house. I couldn’t get Plastic Man and the background in focus so I ended up shooting them separately and then putting them together.”

If you’re doing anything other than going to WonderCon in San Francisco on April 1-3, then you’re going to want to reconsider those plans when you see what’s planned! Here’s the press release our friends at Warner Bros. just put out:
Fans attending on Friday, April 1st, the first day of WonderCon, will be treated to a special “Green Lantern” talent signing and panel featuring the stars of the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures feature film: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard. The signing begins at 4 p.m., followed by the panel discussion at 5 p.m.
The highly anticipated “Green Lantern” movie, in theatres on June 17, 2011, will be the first live-action feature film to star the popular DC Comics character. The film relates the origin story of alter ego
Hal Jordan (Reynolds), a test pilot and the first human chosen to wear the ring that provides him his superpowers.
Following the opening day panel, Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps will have a deep and diverse presence throughout the weekend due to the combined efforts of DC Entertainment (DCE) and the various divisions of Warner Bros. Entertainment, including Warner Home Video (WHV), Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE) and Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP).
WHV will present the World Premiere of the Blu-ray and DVD feature “Green Lantern: Emerald Knights” on Friday evening in the Esplanade Ballroom, immediately followed by a panel discussion featuring filmmakers and voice cast members. Panelists will also take part in an autograph session on Saturday. The all new DC Universe Animated Original Movie weaves six interlocking stories of the Green Lantern Corps’ rich mythology around preparations for an attack by an ancient enemy.
Also on Friday, DC Comics will host a panel about the Green Lantern comic books and the 2011 War of the Green Lanterns crossover event. The DC booth will host Green Lantern-themed signings and giveaways throughout the weekend.
WBIE and DCE will showcase “Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters,” an action-adventure videogame that will be available in conjunction with the theatrical release of “Green Lantern.”
Throughout the Con, visitors to the DC Comics booth will be able to get hands-on time with the game that delivers an immersive experience for Green Lantern fans of all ages.
WBCP’s worldwide licensing program for the highly anticipated “Green Lantern” film has already taken the industry by storm. Product manufacturers around the world have come together to capture and unleash the power of Green Lantern, who lit the way at this year’s Toy Fair, with master toy licensee Mattel bringing to life a comprehensive toy line inspired by the upcoming film. Visitors at WonderCon will get a sneak peek of the toy line, along with the opportunity to be “chosen” to win some of the popular products, long before they hit retail shelves.
All this and more begins with the “Green Lantern” signing at 4 p.m. and panel at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2011. WonderCon opens the doors to the main floor at noon. You probably know by now that MattyCollector.com’s Collector Appreciation Tour made its first stop at C2E2 over the weekend. The team had a great time hanging out with all the local fans, but the highlight had to be announcing the first-ever winners of the “Best Local Collection” Contest and the “City Celebration” Contest!

Talk about creative … Kurt’s “Gulliver’s Travels” themed entry knows no bounds! Kurt tells us he really doesn’t know how the idea came to him. “I’d given up doing anything because of the difficulty of what I originally wanted to do. Then suddenly I got the idea. I called up April (my model) and said ‘I want to tie you up for that contest photo.’ I could feel the dirty look she was giving me over the phone, so I quickly added, ‘I want to do a Gulliver’s Travels photo for it.’ She thought for a moment and replied. ‘As long as I can free myself and flick the figures off me.’ When she pulled herself up, I was nearly hit with push pins that came flying at me! We got a video of the carnage and I’ll probably end up posting it online after the convention.”

For a submission packed with punch, Paul, a 32 year-old freelance digital media production artist, turned to his trusty computer. “First, I picked the setting from some photos that I took over the summer,” Paul says. “The Wrigley building in Chicago is one of my favorite buildings downtown, so I decided to use that as the setting. Then I picked out my characters. Superman and Lex Luthor were the perfect fit for The Wrigley Building daytime shot -- I think It has a great Metropolis look. For the final appearance, I hoped to create a look of conflict between Lex and Superman that showcases their battle for Chicago… The year is 2011, Lex Luthor controls The Magnificent Mile and seems to have all of Chicago in his grasp. Liberty, Freedom, and Justice are all on the deathbed of extinction. As darkness begins to set its final tone, a glimpse of light is seen from the sky, a refection of Earth's Yellow Sun, a light known to the world as Superman. Can Superman save Chicago from the dictating grip of Lex Luthor, or will Chicago fall victim to the darkness of another Great Depression. Who will prevail in The Kryptonian Collision?”

Last week was a stellar one in the DC Universe because All-Star Superman, the 10th entry in the ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies had its big world premiere and is now available!
In All-Star Superman, the Man of Steel rescues an ill-fated mission to the Sun (sabotaged by Lex Luthor) and, in the process, is oversaturated by radiation − which accelerates his cell degeneration. Recently, we ran a poll on the color of the upcoming Man-E-Faces® figure. What had happened was that The Four Horsemen wanted to do Man-E-Faces® with his mini-comic colors (flesh tone), Toy Guru wanted to do a full orange suit version, and a half-and-half version was shown at New York Toy Fair. Still, an agreement couldn’t be reached amongst the team so we figured we’d let the fans decide. And what did you choose?
525 (42%) Half-and-half deco as presented at Toy Fair
421 (34%) Original cross-sell colors (flesh-toned skin)
296 (24%) Original toy colors (orange colored jump suit)
So with 1,242 votes total, over 40% of you said that Man-E-Faces® should be produced in a half-and-half deco. Looks like the Four Horsemen and Toy Guru will just have to wait to see if their preferred versions are ever offered ;)
If you missed the poll, here’s the back story:
“Man-E-Faces® figure has a bit of a deco dilemma. The original cross-sell image of the toy on the back of the package showed Man-E-Faces® with flesh-toned skin with blue armor. But the original toy didn't match this and shipped with orange skin, which most fans have interpreted over the years as an orange skintight suit (much like Man-At-Arms® wears a green skintight suit).
We checked with some of the original Mattel designers and indeed the orange color on the vintage figure was intended to be flesh-toned, but back in the day, our partners in China had a hard time matching the tone and he came out orange!
Most fans have memories of him having an orange suit (or orange skin), especially when you consider his human face was flesh-toned! And even more so, later figures of Man-E-Faces® (such as the 2002 figure) were done with purposeful orange skin/suit, so there is a lot of precedent for this color as well.”
You can look for Man-E-Faces® in his half-and-half deco to arrive August 15th, so be sure to watch this spot for official images and any updates as it gets closer. A big “thank you” to everyone who voted in the poll and helped us to resolve this difficult dilemma!

Yep, we’re officially attending four conventions across the country in addition to SDCC! Come on down to C2E2 in Chicago (3/18-3/20), WonderCon in San Francisco (4/1-4/3), Dragon*Con in Atlanta (9/2-9/5), and New York Comic Con in NY (10/13-10/16) and you’ll be able to hang out in Matty's basement (my basement!) where you can meet members of Mattel’s Design, Marketing, and Packaging teams from the Green Lantern, Ghostbusters™, MOTU, DCU, Young Justice™, Batman, and WWE® brands. They’ll answer all your questions and give you insights into the people and processes involved in making your favorite action figures. We’ll also have panels, special guests, and cool giveaways, like collector buttons customized for each city that you can only get at the conventions.
Like that? Then you’re gonna LOVE this… in every city we visit, we’ll have not one, but two collector contests! First is Mattycollector.com's "Best Local Collection" Contest. Submit photos of your action figure collections and the best photo (in our judges' opinion) wins! Then we’ve got Mattycollector.com's "City Celebration" Contest. Fans submit photos of their favorite Mattel figures getting their action on in the convention city. Get creative, because the most imaginative photo (again, in our judges' humble opinion) takes the prize.
There will be one winner for each contest in each city, for a total of 8 winners. The winners of each city’s contests will be announced at the conventions. The winning submissions and a photo of the winners will be exhibited in the display case at the MattyCollector.com booth. The winners will also receive a prize package filled with Mattel action figures, with an approximate retail value of $500! Because these contests were created to celebrate local collectors, you’ll need to be a legal resident of the state where each respective convention is held (IL, CA, GA, NY).

Like San Diego Comic-Con, New York Toy Fair is one of the most hotly anticipated toy events of the year. Why? Because even though it isn’t open to the public, we unveil some of the biggest toys of the year!
This year, the Mattel Collector Night is on Sunday, February 13th, from 3 PM to 6 PM ET. Of course, I can’t show you images yet, but I promise we’ll have TONS of reveals from all your favorite lines, including a DCU Classics wave, figures from JLU, DCU vs MOTU, DCU Action League®, Ghostbusters™, Masters of the Universe®, and Green Lantern.
There will also be reveals and product on display from Batman, Young Justice™, CARS, WWE®, and even some Barbie® Collector items I know you’re gonna want. When you’re as homely as Grizzlor®, you may not always get the love you need. But not this month, because our furry old friend was just named ToyFare magazine’s Toy of the Month for March!
Flip to page 9 of issue 163 and you’ll find Toy Fare proclaiming that despite the sad state of his personal grooming (or maybe because of it), they’re “wild for this grizzly man!” And really, with insane weapons and fully half his body covered in brushable fur (come on, you know you want to style him up), what’s not to love? It’s no secret ToyFare is a big fan of the entire MOTUC line, so collect all the figures because you never know which one could be Toy of the Month next!

You’ll never hear them say it, but Mattel’s design team is the best in the business. Don’t take my word for it, though … their creations made not one, not two, but three top ten toy lists for 2010!
Fully half of Mania.com’s Top 10 Geek Toys of 2010 list was made up of MattyCollector.com favorites, including Orko® and Prince Adam® (#8), Keldor™ (#6), Starro the Conqueror (#4), Trap Jaw™ (#3) and in a nod to its smooth blend of MOTUC and Robot Chicken, our Mo-Larr vs Skeletor® set, coming in at #2. The great news is that if you missed Mo-Larr vs Skeletor® the first time it was offered, you can get it at a special sale that started January 10th!
ToplessRobot.com’s Ten Best Toys of 2010 list showed love to our Ghostbusters™ line, citing 6” Peter Venkman and his fan-demanded proton stream at #9. They also dug Plastic Man (#6) thanks to all those sweet accessories, and in the #3 spot, the first beast figure in the MOTU Classics line, big bad Battle Cat®.
And speaking of Battle Cat®, he took the top spot on MTV Geek’s Top Ten Toys of 2010 list as “the embodiment of everything great and wonderful about today’s toys.” Tons of accessories and a great sculpt landed Trap Jaw™ at #4 and Darkseid held #9 in “a classic look straight out of Jack Kirby’s New Gods comics.”
All in all, 2010 was a killer year. But I’ve seen some of the toys coming up and I can tell you 2011 is going to be even better. Keep an eye on this spot for official announcements and remember to get your Mo-Larr vs Skeletor® set!

We’ve heard your comments and have been working hard behind the scenes to identify areas where we can improve your purchase experience. There are several changes coming during 2011, starting with our January 18th sale when we’ll be adding CAPTCHA functionality to our website.
You’ve probably all already encountered CAPTCHA or something like it… it’s where you have to type in a word or two to prove you’re a human and not a computer before you can go to the next screen. For our website, what this does is stop automated “bots” from having multiple carts going for the same user just to see which one gets through first. Having all those open carts is both overloading the system and slowing genuine customers from placing real orders. (Fun Fact: CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart.)
So starting on January 18th, when you get to the cart screen you’ll see this before you can place your order:
Just type in the words shown on the screen and you’ll be on your way. That’s it! Since the site won’t be clogged up with those evil bots, this should help you make purchases faster plus increase the stability of the system. As additional enhancements to the website are ready, we’ll announce them here, in our Forums, on Facebook, and on Twitter so keep an (unautomated) eye out for them!
